As we all know, an athlete’s body takes on a lot of stress. Between rigorous workout, practice sessions and games, athletes often suffer chronic aches and pains which over time can become serious injuries.
Here are 5 ways how athletes can benefit from chiropractic care and gain the sporting edge!
1. Undoing the punishment that the body takes in vigorous sport
Athletic performance is affected by a combination of strength, flexibility, speed and coordination, all of which may be enhanced by chiropractic care. When the spine is misaligned, the resulting vertebral subluxations can create areas of irritation in the nervous system, which interferes with the optimum function of other bodily systems. As a result, athletic performance suffers. Athletes getting regular adjustments can also notice improved athletic performance, improved range of motion, better flexibility, increased blood flow and may suffer less injuries. When athletes are adjusted regularly, they often attribute their success to regular chiropractic care.
2. Chiropractic treats a variety of sports injuries
It’s been show that high impact sport can place the same amount of strain on the body as an auto collision. Because spinal adjustments reduce the irritation of nerve roots between the vertebrae, the healing time from injuries can be shortened. For high impact athletes, adjustments can increase performance and flexibility while lowering the risk of injury. Adjustments for low impact athletes can help relieve the strain placed on the body.
3. Non-invasive, drug free treatment
Chiropractic treatment helps athletes recover from injuries without the need for painkillers, drugs or invasive surgery. One of the most favoured treatments for athletes is the Active Release Technique, where stretching and massage are combined with moving the affected joints through a range of different motions.
“I’ve been going to chiropractors for as long as I can remember. It’s as important to my training as practicing my swing.”
4. Injury prevention and performance
Chiropractors treating athletes treat the whole person, and tailor special programs aimed at injury avoidance and improved range of motion. Many studies support chiropractic care helping athletes achieve an optimal level of performance. A Canadian research team included chiropractic in the rehabilitation program of 16 injured female long distance runners. The runners recovered quickly, with 7 of them scoring “personal bests” while under chiropractic care. 5. Decreasing pain
The spine is an important structure that contains many pain-sensitive areas, in particular the joints, muscles, nerves, discs and ligaments. Any misalignment in the spinal column can place abnormal stress and strain on any of these areas. In a recent article reviewing efficacy of spinal therapy, chiropractic adjustments were consistently better than medical option in reducing the intensity of lower back pain, plus restoring normal function.
