Our Chiropractic Services

Here at North Cairns Chiropractic, Dr. Collis primarily uses Thompson Technique on the Omni Drop Table.

The Thompson Technique, also known as the “drop table” technique, is a specific method of spinal manipulation used by chiropractors to adjust the spine. It involves the use of a special table that has sections that can drop slightly when the chiropractor applies a specific force to the spine.

During a Thompson Technique adjustment, the patient lies face down on the table while the chiropractor uses their hands to apply a specific force to the spine. When the force is applied, the sections of the table drop slightly, which creates a subtle thrust that helps to correct misalignments in the spine.

The drop table allows for a more specific and gentle adjustment, reducing the force needed to move the spine and making the adjustment more comfortable for the patient.

Who is Chiropractic For?

Chiropractic care is for anyone looking to improve their overall health and well-being. It is a form of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders, with an emphasis on the spine.

It is commonly used to treat back pain, neck pain, headaches, and other conditions. It can also benefit people with injuries, such as whiplash or sports injuries.

Chiropractic care is also sometimes used to help improve overall health and wellness, such as improving posture, reducing stress, and increasing mobility. It can be used safely by people of all ages, including children and pregnant women.

Is Chiropractic treatment safe?

Chiropractors use skill, not force or strength to conduct specific chiropractic adjustments. Various types of manual therapy and low force interventions are also used where appropriate.

Chiropractic care has a very low risk profile, especially when compared with more invasive methods of spinal healthcare however, all forms of chiropractic treatment have the potential for adverse reactions in some people.

Do Chiropractic adjustments hurt?

In the majority of cases, not at all. Most of our patients find being adjusted very relaxing.

While slight, brief discomfort after an adjustment may occur, it is rare.

With some adjustments you may occasionally feel or hear a popping sound from the spinal joints. This is caused by a change in pressure in the joint, as spinal movement is improved.

Whatever the technique utilised, chiropractors use skill, not force or strength, to care for people with the highest degree of safety and effectiveness.

What is a Chiropractic adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is a specific force in a precise direction, applied skilfully to a spinal joint that is fixated, “locked up”, or not moving as well as it should. This can help improve or restore motion to the joint, assisting the spine to gradually regain more normal motion and function.

There are different techniques used to adjust the spine. Usually the chiropractor’s hands or a specially designed instrument called an Activator delivers a brief and highly-accurate thrust.

Restoring better spinal function can help improve mobility, vitality, and endurance.

Are x-rays necessary?

Only if clinically indicated. If required, x-rays are bulk billed if you hold a Medicare card.

How many appointments will it take?

That depends entirely on you – ie, how long your pain has been present, how well your body holds the corrective adjustments and whether or not you comply with any recommended care schedule and exercises. Our goal is to get people out of pain and restore function as quickly as possible. In a small number of cases, particularly where spinal problems have been present for a long time, occasionally dating back to childhood falls, may require longer term care.

Will Chiropractic help if I've had previous spinal surgery?

As Dr Collis has been trained in a wide variety of adjustment techniques, he can recommend gentle treatment for those who have had surgery, aiming to reduce post-surgical pain by increasing the function of the area around the surgical site and any other painful sites where the body has compensated for the traumatised area.

Note – it is essential that you advise us of previous spinal surgery when making your appointment and bring in any x-rays, scans or other medical records you may have regarding the surgery.

Do I have to remove my clothes during the appointment?

No. Some Chiropractors require this, however at North Cairns Chiropractic we do not consider it necessary.
